good morning. thank you for joining us on this monday morning october 22nd i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check weather, traffic, the next time steve says grab your umbrella, find it, listen to him. >> sometimes mother nature throws a curve but it cooperated this time. it was long overdue for our first rain from the north. i know we've had showers before but this is where everyone gets in on the party here. plenty of rain going through. most of the heaviest rain will be to the north bay. highs today in the 60s. steve, right now traffic on the san mateo bridge looks pretty good as you head out to the high-rise. dumbarton bridge as well. also looking at the commutes here. we are looking at the bay bridge. remember there is standing water in many cases. just leave the house early if you can. standing with ther is especially hard to see in the dark in the outside lanes. just be careful. ktvu tara moriarty is out on the san mateo bridge and tara, that bridge has reopened.

>> reporter: that is correct, good morning to you sal. we are out here at the toll plaza. you can see some of the improvements that were made over the weekend. behind me they have new cushions on the safety rails. more new lightbulbs. the big new is the earthquake safety improvements all finished early. cal tran opened the bridge shortly after 4:00 this morning. we caught the first car going through the toll plaza. there is good news crews were able to get more work done than anticipated. there will be no bridge closure next weekend. the bridge shut down friday night so they could replace a cracked beam. they say a combination of good weather and good luck helped them finish early. >> the best i can tell you all of the work just came together. the panels fit appropriately. the equipment was here. everything was in place. and everything just worked like clock work. >> reporter: in addition to permanently fixing the bridge they were able to fill potholes, clear away brush and

trash that is work they hadn't expected to start until next weekend. so once again the san mateo bridge is back in business and traffic is really flowing just as it would on any other morning. live from hayward i'm tara moriarty. 5:01. happening right now the chp has closed one lane of northbound 8980 because of flooding. look at this. now that flooding is responsible for at least one spinout already. other cars have been sending look at the water shooting several feet into the air. at first two of the lanes were blocked but cal ran was able to clear some of the water from one of those lanes. we have no idea when that other lane will reopen. and because of the weather, no electricity right now for more than 3,000 pg&e customers. here's the biggest problem areas in the east bay. in the bay area the power is out for almost 2,000 customers. in oakland more than 500

customers. fairfield has lost power as well. same thing for daly city. richmond 343 customers don't have power. pg&e crews are working on it. a rude awakening just hours ago for san lorenzo. a car crash. authorities say the driver was speeding as he drove over railroad tracks and then lost control. the car flew through the air, crashed into a parked mini van, and also damaged another car. the driver of the car was arrested. a passenger had to be treated for minor injuries. in election news this morning, president obama and mitt romney meet in florida for their third and final debate. tonight. tonight's debate focuses on foreign policy. coming up the latest poll numbers in the presidential race just 15 days away from the election. if you plan to vote in the upcoming election, you need no be registered by tonight. janine de la vega is live at

the registrars office in san jose with more on why they are making a big push for south bay residents to come out and sign up. >> reporter: the registrars office here in san jose is going to open up in the next three hours. that is when they will begin their big push to get people to register. you can see this is where people it's a drop box for ballots for people to already drop their ballots off. they there be represented as workers -- there will be representatives here from the registrars office until midnight work song people can fill out their forms to register in time for the presidential election. typically here in santa clara county if you look at the past voter turnout people come out in strong numbers. in 2008 during the last presidential election. 86% of registered voters cast their ballots in the city. for those that are already --

season is moving through. most of that is staying to the north. morning rain will give way to showers. but i think they will play tonight. sentence for the morning we have some rain. unsettled pattern today tuesday, and wednesday morning. high pressure builds back in for three or four days. i know what some of you are thinking it will be here for another week. no. we have rain moving through right now. heaviest through marin county. heavy snow reported blue canyon last time i looked. first we have to get this cold front to slice through. that is what is going on. you can see there is a back edge to this. and probably get some sun and cloud up again and get more showers. heaviest to the north. cloudy, rain. showers this afternoon. highs in the 60s for everybody.

new this morning a judicial commission in pakistan has completed its investigation of the u.s. raid that killed osama bin laden. the commission spent the past year and a half questioning military officers. bin laden's wives and residents of the pakistani town where the al qaeda leader lived for more than five years. it concludes no one in the town knew bin laden was living among them and in the weeks before he was killed bin laden was so concerned about his safety he refused to step foot in the open courtyard. tonight president obama and mitt romney meet in florida for their third and final debate. a new wall street journal poll is showing they are tied at 47%

head into that debate. ktvu alison burns reporting from our washington, d.c. newsroom. this debate could have a big impact on the elections. alison. >> although, dave, there is big sports competition on tv tonight so viewer ship could be down for this debate, but it is likely to be another testy one. round three in the focus tonight for president obama and mitt romney is foreign policy. on the table what to do about the war in afghanistan. unrest in the middle east. iran pursuing a nuclear weapon and the presidents handling of the recent crisis in libya. for president obama one of the biggest challenges would be defining his middle east policy for the next four years. >> he's had successes. he's had some things that are still pretty hurricaney. >> reporter: romney's challenge could be bigger because his campaign has been largely about the economy. he has not given many specifics on foreign policy.

to confirm the treats are to flame. time is 5:14. police in watsonville are looking for the man that pulled out a gun right in front of a child. it happened right in front of the parking lot of the krista laundry mat. the man pulled out a loaded gun over the argument of a nosey child. the suspect threatened the victim adds they drove away. just in time for rainy monday morning. this is school bus safety week. chp is working with schools to make sure kids stay safe. the chp will be teaching stupids to be careful when they get on and off buses. theme this year i see the driver, the driver sees me. all other drivers were being reminded slow down when you see the flashing yellow lights on the school bus and just stop when you see the red light. >> that is a great, great

campaign. the driver sees me is key. make sure you have eye contact. 5:15 is the time. a lot of advice for drivers today. slow down would be the biggest one. >> leave yourself a little extra time. make sure that you keep your eyes on the road because there has been flooding out there because of the overnight rain. i will show you some of the pictures here. san francisco definitely wet. northbound 101 approaching the 80 split. you will see traffic that will be a little slow. east 80 at seventh they were repairing sand barrels that were hit overnight. also this morning we are looking at the westbound bay bridge. there is a little bit of a backup. flooding on highway 4 at hill crest avenue has closed. that freeway at that particular location you can get off the freeway and use a detour of that highway 4 does look good over to bay point. let's go to steve. heaviest rain finally finally. we are long overdue pho for it.

most of the heyier totals a quarter to a third. the biggest area of rain i can find is mill valley. that seems to be the strongest. as we zoom out you can see the coverage is extensive. it's starting to slide south. northern part of the peninsula and east bay and south bay dealing with cloudy skies. snow is picking up in the sierra nevada. winter weather advisory is up there. you can see the rain and snow line. just to the east of grass valley and then moving up into the sierra. blue canyon, tahoe, and truckee all reporting snow. very cool unstable air. this is finally a winter like system beginning to move in. it looks like it will settle in for today. tuesday and then start to lift out wednesday. you can see the wind is all storm direction if you will. southeast until that turns west or northwest. cloudy, rain heaviest to the north. showers this afternoon. forecasted highs really stuck.

62-68 should cover it. cloudy, cooler. rain turning to showers. showers and a cool unstable pattern tuesday into wednesday. clearing on thursday. friday and saturday looks good. lows will be chilly though. increasing clouds on sunday. >> thank you, steve. crude oil prices inching up this morning. the price topped $90 a barrel. analysts say the violence in syria appears to be spreading across the middle east which could limit production and shipping in the region. overnight asian markets ended the trading mixed. japan closed with its sixth straight gains. china and hong kong also closed up. right now most european markets are open and they are on the upside. sentence checking in on our numbers. futures do indicate a higher opening this morning.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 5:21 is the time right now. that is a blimp like aircraft in florida with message support for republican presidential romney. his face is printed on the side along with the message america needs romney. it had been seen flying over south florida and high winds forced the emergency landing. the transportation security administration is removing their controversial body scanning machines from major airports. they will be removed from high traffic airports and put in

smaller airports. larger airports will get newer machines that display a genetic drawing of the persons body. tsa officials say the new machines will get travelers through security more quickly. group of people out to rob a man in richmond ended up shooting him. this was at the north richmond ball field yesterday afternoon. the contra costa times report three suspects ganged up on a man. one suspect had a gun. there was a struggle over the gun and the victim was shot in the leg. he is in stable condition. time is 5:23. a woman from novato found a piece of outer space in ore yard. she didn't think anything of it until days later. that is when nasa announced that a large meteor that streaked across the sky witness night may have dropped debris in the north bay. >> so i got the ladder out and checked here and didn't see

anything. i took it around inside the gate and it was right here. >> and what she found was a small rock different from the others in her yard. she says when she discovered a magnet -- manager net would stick magnet would stick to it that is when she calmed nasa. ipad mine knee is expected to launch this tomorrow. that is not the only apple product they are excited about. analysts will predict we will see new macs, mac books and mac minis. the smaller ipad is expected to have seven inch screen and cost about $200 less than the ipad. if you want to reserve picnic tables at golden gate park there is an app for that. the recreation and park department launched the free iphone app. it allows everyone to parks

well. it is welt as you have been saying. the traffic will be impacted by this. a lot of standing water all over the place. also looking at the commute here at the toll plaza has not become very heavy yet. let's go back to the desk. we are on storm watch this morning. we have seen some spinouts and flooding out on the roads already. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge joins us now in green beret to tell us about problem areas there in marin county. alex. >> reporter: this is one of the problem areas. we are here in marin county where the rain is coming down pretty well. this is the 101 going north at lucky drive. the rain is coming toward -- the lane coming toward us are the northbound lanes. there is a bit of standing water on the roadway as the car makes its way through the area. let me show you another trouble spot around the bay area. that is downtown okay land. we shot this video earlier on this morning. it's the transition from 880

northbound to 980. there was a lot of standing water. cal tran was out there trying to clear up that train and get that area cleared up. obviously a major hazard for people driving in that area. a lot of other flooded spots as you move throughout the bay area. also we have seen a lot of spin yachts and crashes too. a lot of people not slowing down with the slick roads out there. and that is a real problem for chp. we did talk with an officer this morning off to the side of the road dealing with a car off to the side of the road he told me they had a lot of crashes this morning. when they get the first rain like we are seeing right now the first significant rain you get all the oils in the roadway. they come up out of the roadway and makings things even more slick 37 you need to slow down this morning as you head out the door. be aware the roads are wet and give yourself extra time. we are liveness morning in marin county alex savidge. time now is 5:31. police in pittsburg searching for whoever killed a man last night. it happened near railroad

avenue. police are not sure if the victim was stabbed or shot. autopsy is scheduled tomorrow. if you have any information call pittsburg police. also this morning jury deliberations will begin in the trial of giselle esteban. the woman accused of killing nursing student m chill le. she killed her former friend last may because she thought le was having an affair with her exboyfriend. happening right now the san mateo bridge it's open again. ktvu tara moriarty is out there live right now to tell us about the work they finished and there is more good news. >> reporter: most of the work that was done you probably won't see or notice. cal tran wrapped up the earthquake safety work early.

when his suv hit and killed them. his 12-year-old daughter was there she wasn't injured. he pleaded guilty and could be held in juvenile detention until he is 21 years old. a fantasy sex league has been exposed. it involves student athletes and have has been happening for years. why the school principal says students will not be disciplined. extra police rushed in yesterday. they cleared out rowdy fans after a big fight at a san jose earthquakes game. it broke out during a magic against the l.a. galaxy at buck shaw stadium. it's in an area where dozens of visiting galaxy fans were. some assaulted the police. >> what i thought from up there was unnecessary brutality.

>> stop resisting. you are under arrest. >> police arrested at least seven people. the quakes tied the galaxy 2-2. first playoff game that is november 7th. now before the soccer match, there was this. the ground breaking ceremony for the earthquakes new stadium near the san jose airport. there is a wrecking ball painted like a soccer ball hit the ground and 6,266 fans shoveled dirt. that set a new guinness world book record. >> that is pretty cool they had them doing that. 5:35 is the time. sal, hopefully no big problems. i know we have had a few spinouts. >> we've had minor fender benders. i want to show you the pictures we have for you.

northbound 101 a little bit wet and windy. and it's not going to be the the greatest morning commute. bay bridge toll plaza not a big crowd. just yet. it's still early. no problems on the bridge. but again you will see some standing water on some of the ramps coming up to the bay bridge. napa highway 29 there is a closure because a tree came down. those are the things we dealing with this morning. we are also still dealing with highway 4 near hill crest. 5:36 let's go to steve. >> sal, i'm going shopping for mens shoes about 5:00 this afternoon. you want to come along? >> sure. nothing to do. oh wait yeah there may be something to do. there be sun and clouds and yes there could be showers. it will be breezy and cool. 58 and start dropping throughout the night. keep that in mind but i don't think anybody is going to care. it's not going to be like this. this will go through it. this is the front. which is already on us right

now. it is starting to slide along the san mateo coast. 32 blue canyon truck key and tahoe all reporting snow. so if you are heading up 50 ordinary person 80 you will have to use the chains or wait it out. system is there now. we are getting the southeast front out ahead of this. the front has a ways to go until it turns westerly or north westerly. once that does go by you will feel that cooler air moving in. air quality will be fantastic. heaviest rain to the north. showers this afternoon. 60s on the temps today. 64 should cover for most locations. that rain may take awhile to get through parts of the south bay. showers off and on for tuesday and wednesday. there will be really cold lows once we clear out the clouds

the focus is foreign policy. san sandra endo is in florida. sandra. >> reporter: that is right, pam. it is the last show down between the presidential candidates. the third and final one just two weeks before voters head to the polls. as you mentioned the focus will be on foreign policy. the economy is still the top issue for voters. but with troops still in afghanistan, unrest in the middle east and concern about iran gaining nuclear weapons capability, foreign policy matters to americans. >> people want to know they have a strong steady hand in the oval office. they don't want someone who is reckless and been consistently wrong on foreign policy issues as governor romney has. >> reporter: the obama campaign released a new ad today attacking mitt romney's positions on the wa in afghanistan and iraq. >> president obama ended the iraq war. mitt romney would have left

dead heat, there could be more fire works tonight. reporting live in bo coo ray tone, florida. back to you. we >> we will stream that debate live on our website at ktvu.com. 5:43. wisconsin three women were shot and killed, four others were wounded in a shooting rampage inside of a beauty salon. police say 45-year-old radcliffe franklin road a cab to that beauty salon and started shooting. it's believed the shooting was related to a domestic dispute between radcliffe and his wife. police have not said yet whether his wife is among the victims. back here at home there was

chaos in a vallejo neighborhood. it turned into that city's tenth police involved shooting of the year. it happened early yesterday morning on alameda drive. two men were fighting when all of a sudden they started breaking car windows and tried to burn down their house. when police went inside, they say a naked man came out with autobahn and put the barrel of the gun against the stomach of a police officer. that is when the other police officers opened fire. one of the men died, the other was booked into jail. police think both men were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. piedmont high school will hold to create -- the schools principal says varsity athletes drafted female students to their fantasy teams and then collected points for sexual activity with them. information about the league surfaced earlier this month after the schools annual assembly on date rape prevention. >> i would say that i hope they

good morning. rain moving through. heaviest from half-moon bay up to daly city. north bay about a half inch for some. it will pick up a little later on. steve, check this out. five inches of snow fell in parts of washington state. the first snowfall of the season up in the mountains. the state department of transportation says they started getting ready for this weather over the summer. they were ready to go out and plow and salt down the roads. the cold overnight rain we've had is not expected to

dampen the spirits of north bay wine makers. it's the first real wine they've had this fall. about 80% of this years crop is already picked. and they kept their crews out in the vineyards as long as possible during the night. most of the grapes still on the vine are cabernet. that is a tougher fruit than other wine groups. a historic berkeley church was badly damaged in a fire. it started just before 10:30 saturday night at the good shepard eyepiece call church. part of the church was being remodeled. it started in the back of the building near the church offices. according to the website the good shepard church was built in 1878 and is the oldest continuously used church in the bay area. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. firefighters are still in lake county this morning watching for flairups near where a wild fire burned about 300 acres. that fire along highway 29 was

contained saturday night. one home, several buildings and cars were destroyed. fire investigators are still trying to figure out how it started. santa clara police need your help to locate a driver that left a man badly injured. it happened sunday october 6th at the intersection of marion drive and ben ton street. police say a man was crossing the road when he was hit. now police are now looking for a newer black ford mustang with a trunk mounted spoiler. police say the car likely has front end and windshield damage. witnesses describe the driver a man in his 20s. he was last soon wearing a red baseball cap. anyone with information is asked to call police. a national football league investigating whether the san diego chargers cheated in last weeks game. players allegedly used a banned sticky substance on their hands to grip the ball better. equipment manager tried to hide
